This checklist helps you confirm that every VAT payment you've made to HMRC is properly documented. Having proof of payment protects you if HMRC queries your account or claims a payment is missing.

VAT registered businesses, landlords with VAT obligations, and anyone who needs to verify their VAT payment history before filing a return or responding to an HMRC query.

How to use

  1. 1Download or open the checklist in Google Docs.
  2. 2For each VAT quarter, enter the payment date and amount.
  3. 3Add the HMRC payment reference number from your bank statement or payment confirmation.
  4. 4Tick the box once you've verified the payment shows on your HMRC account.
  5. 5Keep a copy with your VAT records for at least 6 years.
  6. 6Use this checklist when preparing your next VAT return or responding to HMRC.
