VAT Hub

VAT registration, returns, payments, and penalties explained simply. Practical steps to avoid costly errors.

VAT: the four decisions and duties

VAT runs on four questions. Must you register — the rolling twelve-month £90,000 test, checked continuously, not yearly? What must each return contain, and through which MTD software? When must payment arrive — one month and seven days after each period? And what happens when returns or payments slip — the points system and the 15/30-day payment penalties?

Each question has its own guide in this hub. Together they cover the lifecycle from first registration to the schemes — cash accounting, flat rate, annual accounting — that change the arithmetic for smaller businesses.

The VAT habits that prevent every crisis

Watch rolling turnover monthly from well below the threshold. Keep the VAT element of takings in a separate account so the quarterly bill meets money that was never 'yours'. File on time even when the return is nil — points do not care about amounts. And when cash is short, arrange Time to Pay inside 15 days, which keeps the penalty at zero.

RR VAT clients get registration timed properly, the right scheme chosen and reviewed, and every return prepared and filed inside the window through Deadline Lock.

Frequently asked questions

When do I have to register for VAT?

When taxable turnover in any rolling twelve months passes £90,000, or will pass it in the next thirty days alone. Registration is due within thirty days of the end of the month you crossed. The registration guide covers the test, voluntary registration, and the process.

When are VAT returns and payments due?

Both fall one calendar month and seven days after the end of each VAT period, filed through MTD-compatible software. Direct debit collects a few days later automatically — the safest way to never miss the date.

What if I made a mistake on a VAT return?

Small net errors can be corrected on the next return; larger or deliberate ones need separate disclosure. Prompt self-correction keeps penalties minimal or nil — the returns guide covers the limits and the process.
