In one sentence

A P60 is the annual form from your employer showing the tax paid on your salary for the UK tax year, which runs from 6 April to 5 April.

Quick answer

  • If you work for an employer on 5 April, they must give you a P60 by 31 May, on paper or electronically.
  • You get a separate P60 for each job you hold at the tax year end.
  • Ask your employer for a replacement if you lose it; your Personal Tax Account or HMRC app can provide the same information.
  • If you left before 5 April, you get a P45 instead of a P60 from that employer.

What is a P60 form in the UK?

A P60 shows the tax you have paid on your salary during a tax year. The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. You get a separate P60 for each job you hold at the end of the tax year.

Your employer gives you the form, either on paper or electronically. Keep it with your tax records so you can find your annual pay and tax figures when you need them.

When do you get a P60?

If you are working for an employer on 5 April, they must give you a P60 by 31 May. This summarises the tax year that has just ended.

If you left a job before 5 April, you do not get a P60 from that employer. You get a P45 instead. If you have more than one job at the tax year end, each employer gives you a separate P60.

See GOV.UK's P60 guidance for the issue deadline and what to do if yours is missing.

What information is on a P60?

A typical P60 includes:

  • Your employer's details and your employee details.
  • Your National Insurance number.
  • Total pay and tax for the year in this job, and previous employment where relevant.
  • National Insurance contributions.
  • Your tax code at the end of the year.
  • Student loan deductions, where relevant.

Company benefits are reported on a P11D. Keep that document alongside your P60 if you receive one.

What do you use a P60 for?

Your P60 proves how much tax you paid on your salary. You may need it when claiming back overpaid tax, or as proof of income when applying for a loan or mortgage.

Check which tax year and employment the document covers before sharing it. If you have several P60s, keep them clearly labelled by employer and tax year.

Where can I find my P60?

Start with the paper copy or electronic document your employer provided. If your employer uses an online payroll portal, check whether your P60 is stored there. Otherwise, ask your payroll team or employer where to get it.

Your payroll number can help your payroll team identify your employment record when you contact them.

How to get your P60 or request a replacement

If you have lost your P60, ask your employer for a replacement. Tell them which tax year you need and give enough details to identify your employment.

You could write:

Please could you send me a replacement P60 for the tax year ending 5 April [year]? My name is [your name] and my payroll number is [your payroll number]. Please let me know if you need any further details.

Replace the placeholders and specify the year in your request. If you have not received your P60 by 31 May and were employed there on 5 April, contact your employer to ask for it.

How to obtain the information if your employer cannot provide a P60

Use your Personal Tax Account or the HMRC app to find the information that would be on your P60. You can also contact HMRC for that information.

These options help you find your pay and tax information. For a replacement P60 document, your employer is the first place to ask.

Employer checklist: issuing P60s

If you are a director running payroll, you must issue P60s by 31 May to employees working for your company on 5 April. You can provide them on paper or electronically.

Produce the forms using your payroll software. If your software cannot produce them, use HMRC Basic PAYE Tools. Include this task in your payroll year-end routine so employees have the records they need.
