CIS accountant in Birmingham.

For builders, electricians, plumbers, joiners and groundworkers across Birmingham: CIS registration, refunds, monthly returns, payroll and VAT.

CIS accountants in Birmingham: the direct answer

Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct 20% from a registered subcontractor's pay, or 30% if the subcontractor is not registered, and pass it to HMRC. RR Accountants, a Birmingham practice since 2010 with an office at 64 Yardley Green Road, Bordesley Green (B9 5QE) that works with many East Birmingham trades, registers you, claims back over-deducted tax through your tax return, files contractors' monthly returns and handles the VAT domestic reverse charge.

For subcontractors

  • Register you for CIS so contractors deduct 20% rather than 30%.
  • Check every CIS statement against what you were paid.
  • Claim your expenses and allowances so the deductions are set against your real profit.
  • File your Self Assessment return and claim back any tax overpaid through deductions.
  • For limited companies, offset deductions against the company's PAYE bill through payroll.
  • Advise whether you could apply for gross payment status (no deductions), which has business, turnover and compliance tests.

For contractors

  • Verify new subcontractors with HMRC before you pay them.
  • Work out the right deduction for each payment and give each subcontractor a monthly statement.
  • File your CIS monthly return to HMRC by the 19th of each month.
  • Run payroll for your own employees alongside CIS.
  • Apply the VAT domestic reverse charge correctly on construction services.

Why Birmingham trades use us

CIS mistakes are expensive: a missed monthly return brings penalties, and a subcontractor who does not claim back over-deducted tax is lending money to HMRC for free. Our Bordesley Green office works with many tradespeople in East Birmingham, Small Heath and Yardley, and our Sparkhill HQ serves south Birmingham. One named accountant looks after your CIS, payroll and VAT together.

CIS Accountant Birmingham: FAQs

How much tax is deducted under CIS?

Contractors deduct 20% from payments to registered subcontractors and 30% from subcontractors who are not registered. Subcontractors with gross payment status have nothing deducted. The deductions count as advance payments towards your tax and National Insurance.

Can I get a CIS tax refund?

Often, yes. Deductions are taken from your labour payments without allowing for your expenses, so many subcontractors pay too much. We claim the difference back through your Self Assessment tax return, or through payroll if you trade as a limited company.

When is the CIS monthly return due?

Contractors must file the CIS monthly return by the 19th of each month, covering payments made in the tax month ending on the 5th. Late returns attract penalties, even if you made no payments and forgot to tell HMRC.

Do you cover CIS across Birmingham?

Yes. We work with trades across Birmingham and the West Midlands from our offices in Bordesley Green (B9 5QE) and Sparkhill (B11 4AB). Most of the work runs remotely, with meetings by appointment.
