VAT on food: getting it right
VAT is where food businesses most often go wrong. Food eaten on your premises is standard-rated. Hot takeaway food is standard-rated too. Most cold takeaway food is zero-rated, but cold drinks, confectionery and crisps are standard-rated. If you sell a mix, your till needs to record each type properly so your VAT return is right.
We check how your till and delivery apps record sales, set up the right VAT treatment, and file your VAT returns through Making Tax Digital software. If you are not yet registered, we watch your turnover against the £90,000 registration threshold.

Is VAT charged on takeaway food?
Hot takeaway food is standard-rated at 20%. Most cold takeaway food is zero-rated, though cold drinks, confectionery and crisps are standard-rated. Food eaten on the premises is standard-rated. We set your till up so each sale is recorded at the right rate.
How should a restaurant handle tips?
Since October 2024 employers must pass all tips and service charges to workers fairly, and keep a written policy and records. How tips are paid affects National Insurance, so we set it up properly through payroll.
Do you work with takeaways on delivery apps?
Yes. We use your delivery-app statements alongside your till data, so commission, refunds and the VAT on each sale are all recorded correctly.
