What we do for Birmingham sole traders
- Register you for Self Assessment with HMRC if you have just started trading.
- Prepare and file your Self Assessment tax return, including the self-employment pages.
- Work out your allowable expenses so you pay tax on your real profit, not your takings.
- Tell you what you owe and when, including any payments on account due on 31 January and 31 July.
- Keep your bookkeeping up to date during the year so January is not a scramble.
- Set you up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax and send your quarterly updates.
- Deal with HMRC letters, penalties and enquiries on your behalf.
- Tell you when it is worth thinking about a limited company instead.
Key Self Assessment dates
If you started working for yourself, you need to register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year you started in. The online tax return and any tax you owe are due by 31 January after the tax year ends. If you file late, HMRC charges a £100 penalty straight away, even if you owe no tax, and more if the return stays outstanding.
We track these dates for you and remind you well before each one. If you are already late, call us: we can usually get an overdue return filed quickly and tell you whether an appeal against the penalty is worth making.
Making Tax Digital for sole traders
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to sole traders and landlords whose qualifying income (self-employment and property income before expenses) is over £50,000 from 6 April 2026, over £30,000 from 6 April 2027 and over £20,000 from 6 April 2028. You keep digital records and send HMRC a quarterly update, then a final declaration after the year ends.
If HMRC has written to you, or your turnover is close to the next threshold, we can choose the software with you, set it up and send the updates for you. See our Making Tax Digital accountant page for the full timeline.

Do I need an accountant as a sole trader in Birmingham?
You do not have to use an accountant, but most sole traders find it saves time and money. An accountant makes sure you claim every allowable expense, files your return on time, and deals with HMRC if they get in touch. RR Accountants has helped Birmingham sole traders since 2010.
What expenses can a sole trader claim?
You can claim costs you have wholly and exclusively for your business, such as stock and materials, tools, vehicle running costs for business journeys, phone and internet for business use, insurance, and accountancy fees. You cannot claim personal spending. We go through your costs with you and only claim what HMRC allows.
When is the Self Assessment deadline?
The online tax return and payment are due by 31 January after the end of the tax year (which runs 6 April to 5 April). Paper returns are due by 31 October. If you are new to self-employment, register by 5 October after your first tax year.
How much does a sole trader accountant cost in Birmingham?
It depends on your turnover, how many transactions you have, and whether you need bookkeeping or Making Tax Digital updates as well as the yearly return. We agree a fixed fee in writing after a free 30-minute call, so you know the cost before we start.
Should I switch from sole trader to a limited company?
Sometimes. A limited company can save tax once profits reach a certain level, but it brings more paperwork and costs. We compare both for your actual numbers and tell you plainly whether a switch is worth it.
