Delivery driver accountants in Birmingham: the direct answer
Most delivery riders and couriers working through apps such as Deliveroo, Uber Eats, Just Eat, Amazon Flex or parcel networks are self-employed, so they register for Self Assessment, file a tax return each year and pay tax on their profit after allowable costs. RR Accountants, a Birmingham practice since 2010 with offices in Sparkhill (B11 4AB) and Bordesley Green (B9 5QE), puts every app's earnings on one return, claims vehicle costs the best allowed way, and gets drivers ready for Making Tax Digital.

What delivery drivers can usually claim
You pay tax on what is left after allowable business costs. For delivery work these commonly include:
- Vehicle costs, worked out either with HMRC's flat mileage rates or from actual costs (fuel, repairs, insurance, road tax and capital allowances). You cannot mix the two for the same vehicle, so we compare them before you commit.
- Bike, e-bike or scooter costs if you ride rather than drive.
- Phone, data and phone mounts used for the apps.
- Insulated bags, hi-vis and other kit you need for the work.
- Parking and tolls while working (not fines).
- Accountancy fees.
More than one app, one tax return
Many Birmingham drivers work two or three apps in the same week. Since 2024, online platforms report sellers' and service providers' earnings to HMRC, so every app's income needs to be on your return. We collect the weekly statements from each app, match them to your bank, add your costs and file one accurate return.
Records and Making Tax Digital
App statements make record keeping easier than most trades. We set up a simple routine so your records stay digital through the year. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax needs digital records and quarterly updates once your qualifying income is over £50,000 (from April 2026), over £30,000 (from April 2027) and over £20,000 (from April 2028).

Do delivery drivers need to do a tax return?
If you work through the apps as self-employed, yes. You register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you started, and file each return by 31 January. If your total self-employed income is £1,000 or less in a tax year, the trading allowance means you may not need to tell HMRC.
Does HMRC know what I earn from the apps?
Yes. Digital platforms now report their sellers' and service providers' earnings to HMRC each year, so the income on your return should match what the apps report.
Mileage rates or actual costs?
Flat mileage rates are simpler; actual costs can give more relief on an expensive vehicle or one with high running costs. Once you pick a method for a vehicle you must stick with it, so we work out which suits you first.
How much does an accountant for delivery drivers cost?
We agree a fixed fee in writing after a free 30-minute call, based on how many apps you use and how your records are kept. No hourly billing.
