Ecommerce and online seller accountant in Birmingham.

Accounts, VAT and tax returns for Birmingham businesses selling online, whether you trade as a sole trader or a limited company.

Ecommerce accountants in Birmingham: the direct answer

Online sellers pay tax on their profit after stock, platform fees, postage and other allowable costs, and must register for VAT if taxable turnover goes over £90,000. RR Accountants, a Birmingham practice since 2010 with offices in Sparkhill (B11 4AB) and Bordesley Green (B9 5QE), reconciles your marketplace payouts to sales and fees, handles VAT including the marketplace rules for overseas sellers, prepares your accounts and tax return, and sets up Making Tax Digital records.

Where online sellers get it wrong

  • Treating the payout as the sale. Marketplaces deduct fees, refunds and advertising before they pay you, so your turnover is higher than your bank receipts.
  • Not tracking stock. Profit depends on the cost of goods you actually sold, so year-end stock needs counting.
  • Missing the VAT threshold. Registration is needed when taxable turnover in the last 12 months goes over £90,000, and gross marketplace sales count, not your net payout.
  • Forgetting that platforms report to HMRC. Since 2024, online platforms send HMRC details of what their sellers earn.

What we do for Birmingham sellers

  • Link your Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Shopify or TikTok Shop data to cloud bookkeeping so sales, fees and refunds post correctly.
  • VAT registration, VAT returns under Making Tax Digital, and advice on the right VAT scheme.
  • Year-end accounts, Corporation Tax for companies, and Self Assessment for sole traders and directors.
  • Advice on when moving from sole trader to limited company makes sense.

Records and Making Tax Digital

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax needs digital records and quarterly updates once your qualifying income is over £50,000 (from April 2026), over £30,000 (from April 2027) and over £20,000 (from April 2028). VAT-registered sellers already keep digital records for VAT.

Ecommerce Accountant Birmingham: FAQs

Do I need to tell HMRC about selling online?

If you are trading (buying to resell, or making things to sell) and your total trading income is more than the £1,000 trading allowance in a tax year, yes. Selling your own unwanted belongings is usually not trading.

When do online sellers register for VAT?

When taxable turnover in any rolling 12 months goes over £90,000, or you expect it to in the next 30 days alone. Turnover means gross sales, not what the marketplace pays out.

Can you work with my marketplace data?

Yes. We work from Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Shopify and TikTok Shop reports and connect them to cloud bookkeeping so fees and refunds are recorded correctly.

How much does an ecommerce accountant cost?

We agree a fixed fee in writing after a free 30-minute call, based on your channels, order volume and whether you are VAT registered.
