Startup accountant in Birmingham.

The right structure, the right registrations and a clear first-year calendar for new Birmingham businesses, from our offices in Sparkhill and Bordesley Green.

Accountants for Birmingham startups: the direct answer

A new business has to choose between sole trader and limited company, register with HMRC (and Companies House for a company), set up bookkeeping, and meet its first deadlines: Self Assessment registration by 5 October after your first tax year, or a company's first accounts and Corporation Tax return. RR Accountants, a Birmingham practice since 2010 with offices in Sparkhill (B11 4AB) and Bordesley Green (B9 5QE), sets all of this up and agrees a fixed fee in writing before any work starts.

Sole trader or limited company?

Sole trader status is simple and cheap to run: you file one Self Assessment return and pay Income Tax and National Insurance on your profit. A limited company is a separate legal entity that pays Corporation Tax, and you take money out as salary and dividends; it brings more admin but can suit higher profits and limits personal liability. We compare both using your expected profit.

What we set up

  • Company formation, or Self Assessment registration for sole traders.
  • Business bank account and cloud bookkeeping set up from day one.
  • VAT advice: whether to register now or when you approach the £90,000 threshold.
  • Payroll if you take on staff, including workplace pension duties.
  • A first-year deadline calendar so nothing is missed.

Records and Making Tax Digital

Starting with digital records now saves work later. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax needs digital records and quarterly updates once your qualifying income is over £50,000 (from April 2026), over £30,000 (from April 2027) and over £20,000 (from April 2028).

Startup Accountant Birmingham: FAQs

When do I need to tell HMRC I have started a business?

As a sole trader, register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you started. A new limited company must tell HMRC it is active for Corporation Tax within 3 months of starting to trade.

Should I start as a sole trader or a limited company?

It depends on your expected profit, risk and plans. Many start as sole traders and incorporate later. We run the numbers both ways on a free 30-minute call.

Do I need to register for VAT straight away?

Only if you expect taxable turnover over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone or go over it in a rolling 12 months. Some businesses register voluntarily to reclaim VAT on start-up costs.

How much does a startup accountant cost?

We agree a fixed fee in writing after a free 30-minute call. No hourly billing.
