What a tax accountant does for you

  • Self Assessment tax returns for employees with other income, sole traders, landlords and company directors.
  • Capital Gains Tax on selling a rental property, a second home, shares or a business.
  • Salary and dividend planning for limited company directors, reviewed each tax year.
  • Landlord tax: rental profit, allowable expenses, mortgage interest and Making Tax Digital.
  • HMRC letters, compliance checks and enquiries: we reply for you and keep you informed.
  • Late or missed returns: we file the outstanding years and look at penalty appeals.

Selling a property in Birmingham? The 60-day rule

If you sell a UK residential property that was not your main home, such as a buy-to-let, you usually have to report the sale to HMRC and pay any Capital Gains Tax within 60 days of completion. This is separate from your Self Assessment return.

From 6 April 2026 the rate is 18% for gains within the basic rate band and 24% above it. Most people have a £3,000 tax-free allowance for the 2026 to 2027 tax year. You can deduct buying and selling costs, such as estate agent and solicitor fees, and the cost of improvements like an extension, but not normal maintenance.

We work out the gain, check which reliefs apply, file the 60-day return and make sure it matches your annual tax return.

When HMRC writes to you

Do not ignore an HMRC letter, and do not guess the answer. Send it to us. Once you have authorised us as your agent we can speak to HMRC, check what they are asking and reply with the right records. Many letters are routine; enquiries and compliance checks need a careful, documented reply.

Tax Accountant Birmingham: FAQs

What is the difference between an accountant and a tax accountant?

A tax accountant focuses on tax returns, tax calculations and dealing with HMRC, rather than bookkeeping or company accounts. At RR Accountants the same team covers both, so your accounts and your tax are prepared together.

Do I have to pay Capital Gains Tax when I sell a rental property?

Usually yes, if your total gains for the tax year are above the £3,000 allowance. For most UK residential property sales you must report and pay within 60 days of completion. Selling your own main home is usually exempt through Private Residence Relief.

Can you deal with HMRC for me?

Yes. Once you authorise us as your tax agent we can talk to HMRC, reply to letters and handle compliance checks. You stay responsible for your tax return, but we do the work and explain each step.

How much does a tax accountant cost in Birmingham?

It depends on your income sources and what you need. We agree a fixed fee in writing after a free 30-minute call, so you know the cost before we start.
