Accountants for Oldbury: the short answer

RR Accountants serves Oldbury (B68 and B69) from our Sparkhill HQ at 380 Stratford Road, Birmingham B11 4AB, about 6 to 7 miles in a straight line. We have no office in Oldbury. Oldbury is in the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, so Sandwell Council, not Birmingham City Council, is your local authority. We have worked in Birmingham since 2010. We prepare Self Assessment returns and limited company accounts, run VAT and payroll, and advise landlords. You get one named accountant and a fee fixed in writing after a free 30-minute call.

Where Oldbury sits: Sandwell's administrative centre

Oldbury is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, and Sandwell Council has its headquarters in the town centre. Until 1966 it had its own borough council, and since 1974 it has been part of Sandwell. It is part of the Black Country, to the west of Birmingham, and its postcodes are B68 and B69.

The B68 and B69 postcodes cover Bearwood, Bristnall, Langley, Old Warley, Oldbury, Rowley, St Pauls and Tividale wards. The area names you will hear locally include Langley Green, Rood End, Causeway Green, Titford and Brandhall. That matters for tax admin because council tax, business rates and landlord licensing all come from Sandwell.

Chemical works, tube makers and the Black Country trades

Oldbury grew on iron, steel and then chemicals. The Albright and Wilson chemical works at Rood End and Langley Green gave the town a national name, and the first Lloyds Bank branch in Oldbury opened in 1864 to serve that factory. Chemical manufacturing is still a presence at Rood End and Langley Green, with smaller sites nearer the centre.

Around that industry sit the usual Black Country supply chains: engineering workshops, fabricators, haulage firms, builders and trade suppliers. Many are small limited companies run by one or two directors, and some are sole traders working as subcontractors.

  • Limited company accounts and Corporation Tax for workshops, hauliers and builders.
  • Capital allowances on machinery and vans, checked before the year end.
  • CIS returns and refunds for construction subcontractors.
  • Payroll and pensions for small teams on shifts or hourly pay.

Retail parks, the town centre and independent shops

Oldbury's retail side is built around large units. A Sainsbury's SavaCentre opened in the town centre in 1980, and Oldbury Green Retail Park was built beside the ring road in the mid-1990s. Neighbourhood parades also serve the residential areas, for example around Causeway Green and Bristnall Fields.

Shop, takeaway and salon owners usually have daily takings, a handful of staff and a VAT question. Registration is required once taxable turnover passes £90,000 in a rolling 12 months, and we check that figure with you monthly so it never arrives as a surprise.

Letting a home in Oldbury

Oldbury has Victorian and Edwardian streets around Rood End, housing at Brandhall that dates from the 1930s, and the Lion Farm estate from the 1960s. Landlords here deal with Sandwell Council. Its Additional Licensing scheme for small HMOs, those shared by three or four people, has covered the whole borough since 1 October 2024. Our West Bromwich page explains it in more detail, and the council's page gives the rules for your property.

The tax side is national. Rent less allowable costs is added to your other income. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies from 6 April 2026 if qualifying income is over £50,000, from 6 April 2027 over £30,000 and from 6 April 2028 over £20,000. Qualifying income is gross self-employment and property income, before expenses.

Langley, Titford and the canal side

James Brindley's Birmingham Canal was cut south of Oldbury town centre in 1768, and the Titford Canal ends at Titford Pool, about a mile south of the centre. Wharves, yards and small units grew up along that waterway network, and some of that mixed industrial and residential land is still in use today.

Langley Green lies south of the centre, with Barnford Hill Park, a Green Flag park, and Langley Green railway station on the line towards Birmingham and Worcester. Causeway Green sits where the A4123 crosses Pound Road and Causeway Green Road. If your business is run from a unit, yard or van at home, tell us early. Home-office and vehicle costs are claimed differently, and a clean record from day one saves argument with HMRC later.

A year for an Oldbury company director

A private limited company has three clocks. Corporation Tax is normally due 9 months and 1 day after the accounting period ends. Annual accounts go to Companies House within 9 months of the year end, and the Corporation Tax return follows within 12 months. Your own Self Assessment return is due by 31 January.

We line these dates up with VAT quarters and payroll runs. Deadline Lock tracks them, and your Evidence Pack keeps invoices, bank records and mileage together as the year goes on.

Accountants in Oldbury: FAQs

Do you have an office in Oldbury?

No. Our offices are in Sparkhill and Bordesley Green, Birmingham. We serve Oldbury mainly by video, phone and WhatsApp, and meet at either office by appointment, Monday to Friday.

Is Oldbury part of Birmingham for tax and council rules?

No. Oldbury is in Sandwell, with its own council. Council tax, business rates and HMO licensing come from Sandwell Council. Income Tax, Corporation Tax and VAT are set by HMRC and are the same everywhere in the UK.

I run a small manufacturing or engineering company. What do you handle?

Annual accounts, Corporation Tax, VAT, payroll and your own Self Assessment return. We also review capital allowances when you buy machinery or vehicles, so the claim is made in the right year.

I work as a subcontractor on building sites. Can you help?

Yes. We prepare your Self Assessment, work out allowable expenses and check the CIS deductions taken from your payments. Where too much was deducted, we claim the refund.

Does my Oldbury rental property need a licence?

If three or four people share it, it may be a small HMO that needs an Additional Licence from Sandwell Council. Check with the council before you let. Tell us the licence cost so it is treated correctly in your accounts.

How do I get a fee?

Book a free 30-minute call. We ask what you need, then confirm the fee in writing before any work starts. There are no published prices, because the work differs for each client.
