Smethwick: canals, foundries and a changing High Street
Smethwick sits on the western edge of Birmingham, in the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell. It grew around the Birmingham Canal Navigations. James Brindley's old main line reached the town by 1769, and Thomas Telford's deeper new line followed in 1829. The Grade I listed Galton Bridge still carries a road across the cutting.
Heavy industry followed the water. Boulton and Watt opened the Soho Foundry in 1796, and the Mitchells & Butlers brewery at Cape Hill traded from 1879 until 2002. Much of that land is now housing. Today's local economy is smaller scale: shops, takeaways, garages, builders, care providers, workshops and people who work for themselves.
Which council do you pay: Sandwell or Birmingham?
The B66 postcode district straddles the boundary. According to postcodes.io, it covers both Sandwell and Birmingham, with wards such as Smethwick and Soho and Victoria on one side and Soho and Jewellery Quarter on the other. B67 sits in Sandwell, including Bearwood and Bristnall.
It matters because council tax, business rates and landlord licensing follow the council, not the postcode. Look up your address on the Sandwell and Birmingham council websites before you let a property or sign a lease.
Landlords in Cape Hill, Bearwood and the High Street
Housing here is mixed: red-brick terraces from the early 1900s, 1930s semis, newer estates on former industrial sites, and blocks of flats.

Regeneration around the hospital and Rolfe Street
The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick opened to patients on 6 October 2024. Sandwell Council's Grove Lane Masterplan covers the land around it, aimed at new homes. A separate Rolfe Street Masterplan, approved by Sandwell's Cabinet on 21 June 2023, covers the area from Smethwick Rolfe Street station towards New Street. Today much of that area is still employment land.
