Self assessment is required for: landlords with rental profit of £2,500 or more (or £10,000 or more gross); sole traders with business income above £1,000; company directors; anyone liable to the High Income Child Benefit Charge; anyone with untaxed income (investments, dividends, foreign income). HMRC may issue a notice to file even if no tax is owed.
How much does self assessment cost in Birmingham?
Self Assessment fees depend on income sources, property pages, capital gains, overseas income, payments on account, and whether the return is part of a wider monthly engagement. RR Accountants confirms the fixed fee in writing after a 30-minute call.
When is self assessment due in Birmingham?
The same deadline applies everywhere in the UK: 31 January for online returns and tax payment. 31 October for paper returns. An automatic £100 penalty applies if missed, even if no tax is owed. Payments on account are due 31 January and 31 July.
Can RR Accountants file my Birmingham self assessment?
Yes. We handle self assessment for Birmingham landlords, sole traders, company directors, and contractors from our B11 4AB, Sparkhill office. We cover all income types: rental income and property pages, employment income, dividends, savings interest, capital gains, and overseas income. Deadline Lock in Compliance Vault™ ensures nothing is missed.
Do Birmingham landlords need to file self assessment?
Yes, if your property income is above the £1,000 property allowance you should check your position with HMRC, and you must file self assessment if your rental profit is £2,500 or more, or your gross rental income is £10,000 or more. MTD Income Tax from April 2026 adds quarterly digital submission requirements for landlords above £50,000 gross. We handle both the annual return and the MTD quarterly submissions for every landlord client.
Do I need an accountant to file my self assessment in Birmingham?
No. You can file your own Self Assessment return online, and you stay legally responsible for it either way. An accountant is worth considering when your return mixes income types such as rental income, dividends and capital gains, or when you want deadlines and tax planning handled for you. We need your authority before we can deal with HMRC on your behalf, and we explain how that works at the start. Book a 30-minute call to see whether we are a fit.
